Melissa Brennan MA, LPC
Therapist
Melissa works with children and teens who are dealing with a variety of problems including adjustment issues, anxiety, ADHD, depression, anger, and other behavioral concerns.
With younger clients, Melissa enjoys using play therapy approaches and incorporating games and art to address problems. Play therapy allows children to reach therapeutic goals and learn how to problem solve and practice coping skills. Children also develop self-esteem, self-direction, and are able to exercise control over their environment.
Melissa uses CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) approaches with older clients who are struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, and anger. She enjoys helping children and teens identify and explore difficult emotions and thoughts. Empowering them to change unhelpful thoughts and develop positive coping skills is a priority. The majority of her sessions focus on emotional expression and regulation, coping skills, and self-esteem building. She also incorporates mindfulness techniques and uses humor when appropriate.
As a child therapist, the approach and techniques Melissa uses in therapy reflect the goals and personality of each of her clients and their unique needs. Developing a strong therapeutic relationship with her clients is her number one priority.
When reflecting on her work, Melissa says, “I love working with kids because of their humor, honesty, and creativity.”
