Child Counseling
When a child comes to our office for Child Counseling Services, he or she is assessed to identify the best therapeutic approach to meet his or her needs. Our Child Counselors utilize Evidence-Based Treatments for presenting problems whenever possible. Presenting problems are also generally best treated using a combination of Individual Counseling and Family Counseling techniques.
Teen Counseling
Counselors at Tender Hearts are also experienced with Teen and Adolescent issues that may need to be addressed with our Teen Counseling Services. Experienced Teen Counselors who work with this age group also use Evidence-Based Treatments when applicable and frequently use a combination of Individual Counseling and Family Counseling. The teenage years are often a time of turmoil and confusion for both teens and parents alike. Experienced Teen Counselors at Tender Hearts can help your family learn to communicate better and return to a more positive, healthy family dynamic.
Family Counseling
Family Counselors at Tender Hearts use Family Counseling Services to address a variety of family issues. Family Counselors typically address defiant and aggressive behaviors, poor family communication, and can help with Co-Parenting skills to aide families going through separation and divorce. Family Counselors can help family members adjust to their new roles more efficiently and effectively. As mentioned above, Family Counseling is also recommended in combination with individual Child Counseling and Teen Counseling. Many of the above mentioned Evidence-Based Treatments involve parents in the process and our Family Counselors understand that involving parents in treatment will help the child or teen achieve faster, more dramatic results regardless of the targeted behaviors or issues being addressed.
Child & Teen Group Counseling
Our Family Counselors also offer Child & Teen Group Counseling Services for a variety of common child and teen issues. Whether it’s our popular “Keeping Your Cool” Anger Management Group for Elementary Age children or one of the many other groups we offer, children and teens will be motivated to learn in a fun, interactive group format!
Parenting Classes
Tender Hearts is now offering Parenting Classes for families in our area! One of the more popular Parenting Classes we offer is the proven “1-2-3 Magic” program. This is a popular and trusted parenting strategy that has been used worldwide with much success. It is also used locally by many Daycares and Pre-Schools in the Cape Girardeau and surrounding areas. 1-2-3 Magic is geared for children ages 2-12 and has worked wonders to help parents all over the world manage their defiant children! Check back often because we will be adding additional Parenting Classes covering a wide variety of topics.
Evidence-Based Treatments
Frequently, the Child Counseling Services and Family Counseling Services offered at Tender Hearts involve the use of Evidence-Based Treatments. These include Kazdin Parent Management Training™ (PMT) to treat defiance and behavioral problems associated with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Problem-Solving Skills Training (PSST) for learning effective problem-solving skills, impulse control skills, and how to deal with bullying assertively and appropriately, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for trauma, grief, and sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) for different forms of anxiety and depression. Additionally, when age appropriate, Child Counselors may use Prescriptive Play Therapy. This approach may include a combination of Child-Centered Play Therapy, Directive Play Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy, Art Therapy, Bibliotherapy or Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy.
